4-Hour Respirable Crystalline Silica
DESCRIPTION
This course provides an in-depth overview of OSHA’s Respirable Crystalline Silica standard for the construction industry. Participants will learn the requirements for limiting worker exposure to respirable crystalline silica and the protective measures employers must implement. The course explores the flexible compliance options available under the standard, including the use of control methods outlined in Table 1 and alternative approaches based on exposure assessments. Special emphasis will be placed on strategies that are practical and effective for small employers. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to select and apply appropriate dust control methods to maintain compliance and protect worker health.
- 1- Hour Introduction & Regulatory Overview
- 1- Hour Compliance Options & Exposure Control
- 1- Hour Written Plan, Medical Surveillance & Training
- 1- Hour Case Studies, Review
OBJECTIVES
- Define what respirable crystalline silica is and identify the health risks associated with exposure in construction settings.
- Explain the key components of OSHA’s Respirable Crystalline Silica standard for construction (29 CFR 1926.1153), including the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) and action level.
- Describe the two primary compliance options: 1. Using control methods outlined in Table 1. 2. Conducting exposure assessments and implementing alternative controls.
- Identify common engineering and work practice controls used to reduce silica exposure on job sites.
- Determine when respiratory protection is required and the proper steps for selection, use, and fit testing.
- Outline the elements of a written exposure control plan and understand the responsibilities of the designated competent person.
- Recognize when medical surveillance is required and summarize the components of the required medical evaluations.
- Understand OSHA’s training and communication requirements and how to effectively convey silica hazards to workers.
- Apply compliance strategies to real-world scenarios, especially for small employers seeking cost-effective solutions.
- Demonstrate understanding of the standard by participating in case studies, discussions, and a final course review.
